Subbie and his mate – The true story of retired racehorse Subzero and his best mate, Graham Salisbury

The moment I met Subzero, affectionately known as Subbie and his master Graham Salisbury, is imprinted in my brain and on my heart. I took a photo of that moment, which master illustrator Mark Wilson captured in illustration in our book Subbie and his mate. Recently Mark gifted me the original artwork and this week I picked it up from the framer.

Timely as on August 29, it was two years since this beautiful animal passed away, joining his wonderful master who had died ten weeks earlier.

I promised them both, Subbie in his favourite paddock and Graham standing beside him, that I would keep their story alive as much as I could. This Cup Day it will be 30 years since Subbie streaked past the winning post, winning the 1992 Melbourne Cup. Leading up to the Melbourne Racing Carnival we will be celebrating Subbie and Graham in many places beginning this Saturday at Dromkeen Gallery, 1012 Kilmore Rd, Riddells Creek.

We will also be launching Votes for Women, a new picture book both written and illustrated by Mark Wilson. There will be Storytime with me and a drawing workshop by Mark.
