May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust

I am extremely honoured to be the recipient of a May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust Creative Time Fellowship.

To be given a gift of time is perhaps the greatest gift any creator can receive, but it’s not just the writing, researching and editing time that is the gift, it’s the pleasure of knowing I can do exactly what I want to do, exactly when I feel like it, without being interrupted.

For example, if I want to get up at 5.30 and start work or go passed midnight, I can (and I do). If I want to take a break and go walking for an hour in the middle of the day, I do, and if I want to visit the library three times a day, I do – basically I eat, sleep and write or do writing-related things, whenever I want or need to and that is such a gift. I also treat myself to long ‘thinking time’ showers and long ‘thinking time’ walks. I have no real sense of time, and it’s wonderful.

I will be doing some talks and workshops for May Gibbs and for the State Library of Queensland which will be fun, stop me from talking to myself and certainly shake out the cobwebs.
