Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards 2014
The 2014 Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards is now in the planning stage for the 30th national children’s poetry competition – a wonderful anniversary to celebrate. The theme ‘What Shall We Tell You’ was inspired by the verse poem by James Elroy Flecker.
The oldest and largest poetry competition for school aged children in Australia.
The Awards aim to inspire students across Australia to express their thoughts creatively through poetry and, by doing so, support the legacy of Dorothea Mackellar and her legendary poem ‘My Country‘. Entries open on March 1st each year and close on the 30th June. In 2013, more than 700 schools entered with 10,000 poems submitted from all over Australia.
How to Enter
Poems from school age children can easily be submitted online once your school, teacher or home school parent has registered. Details about categories, prizes and conditions can be found in the Awards section of the Dorothea Mackellar website.

Junior Categories Judge
I have the honour of being the 2014/15 Junior Categories Judge of these awards and I am so excited to be taking on this role. ‘My Country’ has always been a poem dear to my heart and my memories of reciting it out loud is something which will remain with me for always. Poetry was my favourite subject at primary school and I am looking forward very much, to reading the creations of today’s Primary School students . . . I know they will be wonderful.
