Along the Road to Gundgai – The Dog on the Tuckerbox

I’ve recently returned from a road trip to Sydney and back on the Hume Freeway so I took the opportunity to call into Gundagai twice, both on the forward and return journeys.

In the years leading up to the publishing of The Dog on the Tuckerbox Illustrated by Peter Gouldthorpe, written by me and published by Black Dog Books, I made many trips along the road to Gundagai.

It seems many years since I tramped around the Gundagai  Cemetary, fossicked in the eclectic Gundagai Museum and took hundreds of photos of the landscape around the area, all in the name of research.

On the forward trip I stopped at The Dog on the Tuckerbox Cafe, right next to the statue, where I signed lots of books and chatted to road travellers while I sat in the winter sunshine.

The return trip was swifter than was planned but we were rewarded on this stretch of the road to Gundagai by a most glorious winter sunset which kept surprising us at every turn.

I stopped to sign some more books for the Gundagai news agency before continuing our journey home to Melbourne.
